Ph.D. candidate in machine learning and computer vision, École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS)

Sherif Abulwafa, Chief Research and Development at VyoO since 2017, leads the R&D team in researching, planning and implementing novel 3D machine learning and computer vision technologies. He is also building and managing a team of researchers and full stack developers working on various applied research and industrial projects.

Sherif also takes the lead of the “Digging into Data” and “The Visibility of Knowledge” projects at École de Technologie Supérieure (ÉTS), University of Quebec, with the role of Graduate Researcher and Coordinator, in collaboration with McGill University, Canada, Stanford University and University of Virginia, USA. He is coordinating and developing machine learning and computer vision techniques to provide efficient computational analysis approaches for large-scale historical collections (∼34 million images). Earlier in his career, Sherif was a software engineer of IBN Ingenieurbüro GmbH in Munich, Germany, he was responsible for developing industrial image processing algorithms. Prior to joining IBN, Sherif worked as research and development engineer at ViSSee AG, a Swiss emerging award-winning startup in Lugano, in developing image processing and computer vision algorithms.

Sherif is a Ph.D. candidate in machine learning and computer vision at ÉTS, University of Quebec. His research focuses on encountering the problem of limited availability of labeled data through self-supervised and unsupervised representation learning techniques. Sherif holds a master’s degree in embedded systems design from ALaRI, Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI), Switzerland, where his research focused on designing smart and efficient embedded systems for a wide range of applications. Additionally, he holds a B.Sc. in electronics and telecommunications engineering from Alexandria University, Egypt.

After working in 3 continents with international insights, Sherif firmly believes that technology in general and AI in particular shall play a vital role in making people’s lives better and easier! During his spare time, Sherif is a tennis player, art enthusiast and an amateur photographer.
